This may not be a major suggestion, but I find that the location option in Profile Fields is one of the only options which is not configurable in the admin panel.

For example, I cannot add the "States" to "United States" as a drop-down. Almost everything else in the admin panel's "Profile Fields" is configurable. For example, Height, Interests, Age Range, Etc... They are all configurable and can easily be modified, except for the "Location" field.

I would like to make this easier for new users to select when joining.

Thanks,

I have the same issue, and is a big problem.  For the "insert state" field some people for example will put California, some put CA, some misspell Calfornia.  This is a big problem because when members try to search by state they get different results.  This could all be fixed with a drop down box with all states, and if you want to take it one step further this logic should be applied down to the city/zip-code level.

i would like the admin to configure how the system finds member matches when a new user signs up. it should be either by state, city or zip code. we have members who fail to type in a completed zip code or mispell their city and when they get into the site are disappointed to find 0 in the "my matches" link. this discourages members to stay on and in the site.

Same exact problem, and it's a big one!  Members search in CA, they dont get results of member who input California, or Cali.  This is a MUST FIX.

Thanks for supporting this request guys! I'm glad I'm not the only 1 with this issue.

I feel we should at least be able to configure it in the admin area, but since we can't, it should be implemented in a future release.

It can be done with a bit of programming, but I don't have the time and this is mostly the reason I paid for a software script. We end up paying for convenience...

I have faith in Skalfa though and hope they will continue to improve on their software.

I felt there was sometype of flaw in the search because people were not finding matches although there were matches in their area. I asked customer service about this and they responded that they do not guarantee the accuracy of the data for searches because they use a third party software and they only update it once a year.

This is very concerning.

I also downloaded the full cities .zip . Its perfect! well not quite. The problem im having with this , is that it does not have all the cities. And you cant add cities. And the cities that are in there are not in alphabeticel order.

I really like the full cities zip. Other than these problems but skadate says they dont support it because its a third party extension.

Anyone else have anything to add about the fullcities.zip

Location system in SkaDate works the following 2 ways:

1) Simple location mode: it comes with SkaDate by default. You don't need to upload any additional databases (fullcities.zip) and users must choose their country from the list and enter their state/county and city as free text values with all the drawbacks you mentioned.

2) Advanced location mode: You need to have complete database of states/counties and cities of the whole world or particular countries. Then users will be able to choose country, state/country, and city from drop-down list among the suggested values. Also users will be able to search and match by radius from a zip/postal code or a city. To add cities from admin panel you would need to know their coordinates which is a problem.

This database comes from a 3rd party, contains zipcodes and cities coordinates and needs to be constantly updated to stay relevant. That is why we can't guarantee its accuracy. All we can do is to download new versions.

We provide this database free of charge, of course. For hosted and managed customers we also install it free. Self-hosted customers can download this database from Customer Area and upload it manually. If you believe another database is more accurate and it contains sufficient info, we can convert it to match SkaDate format for additional fee.

As far as I see from your words you guys do not have the cities database in place. If you wish to have one feel free to let support know. Also, if you have any suggestions regarding this system let me know.

Thanks.

Paul,

I'm not sure if our support team has UK database. Feel free to ask them, I believe we did some cities database integration for UK sites. If not you might want to search for UK database of counties, cities and postal codes with geographic coordinates.

Thanks.

If you mean location on join/search/edit form, look at this solution
http://www.skalfa.com/boards/index.php/topic,48.msg261.html#msg261
Maybe it will help.

Huh  Huh  Huh Hmmmm... can you explain HOW we (self-hosted) go about using the "us_state_city.rar" with the current version of SKADATE?  I don't see any instructions on HOW to install this SQL and integrate it with the software.

Harley

You can download this gzipped mysql dump from CA in downloads sections. (filename: full_location.tar.gz)
Follow this step to install this dump:
1) Download it from CA
2) Unzip->untar
3) Insert this dump into your current Skadate database. You can do it via phpMyadmin or SSH (look up in google how to upload mysql dumps via SSH).
Note: this dump is more than 300MB and SSH is the best way to upload location dump into your database.

There is no manual regarding full location installation yet. Let's move this topic into FAQ. Also we will include it in our Software manual.
