I discovered something extremely useful recently for detecting scammers: take the "Join IP" field displayed on a profile (see attach) and use one of the many services for relating IP address to country to see if the country REALLY matches.
I found it worth checking on several services since they did not always agree. I think I trust them most in the following order:
http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_iphttp://www.toolbarn.com/web-tools/ip-country-lookup/http://www.ip2location.com/demo.aspx It makes extremely depressing reading to find out just how many of the drop-dead gorgeous girls are actually scammers from Nigeria or Ghana or Senegal (all claiming to be in the US), so if you try this, make sure you have a strong drink handy!
Eventually I actually printed off a query from the database of "Females (supposedly) in the US, sorted by IP address" to make it easier to see all the IP addresses from, say, Nigeria together.
Gosh, I wish I'd known about this when I started...I'd have at least been able to catch scammers as they arrived.
Anyway,
my suggestion is that this "Join IP" field display be improved to help admins in this task of matching the IP address with the location from one (or more) of these services.
Some possible things for the design of the improvments:
Goodbye scammers!!
