No, I'm totally against having separate windows open when a user clicks on a profile link.  It will cause complete chaos, since there will very soon be loads of windows open, and users will get totally confused which one they are supposed to use.  Just fix the bug, and make the return actually return to where it came from!  Or if you can't fix it properly, for goodness sake, don't make things worse.
